Event Coordinators: Antonio Mendoza and Ahmed Hakam

The CSCE Student Chapter organized a tour to the BC Women’s and Children’s Hospital to get a closer look at the redevelopment project. Charles Noftall, a UBC Civil Engineering Graduate and Ledcor site coordinator of the project, hosted the tour with the company of the site superintendent and project manager.

The group was given first hand insight into how P3 and JV projects are successfully completed on a mechanically intensive project. To start the tour, the group was shown the 4D model of the project, which animates the construction tasks being completed as scheduled, providing a full vision of the construction process from project start to completion. Next, the group was guided to the top floor of the site where students had a chance to discuss the high safety factor design of a hospital, and inspect the carefully designed and constructed concrete slabs and columns. As the group descended the building, students watched the progress of the mechanical construction. Students were able to gain new introspect at the active construction site, understand the many phases of construction and watch the interdisciplinary coordination that occurs daily in construction projects. The UBC Student Chapter would like to thank the entire Ledcor, Balfour Beatty, Affinity, and BC Children’s and Women’s Redevelopment team for their time and effort which made this site tour possible.
